Ode to a cardigan
By Holly | February 13, 2008
I have this cardigan. It’s grey and about 5 years old and so not attractive. It’s old-manish. It’s pilled. It’s store bought. It’s acrylic. Acrylic. But it’s my favorite go-to throw on sweater. I wear it to work. I wear it running around. I wear it with pajamas around the house. Have I told you that I am rarely dressed in my home? I get dressed to go out, to work and things, but when I am home again I get into pajamas – unless I know someone is coming by. Note: don’t drop in on Holly unless you want to check out her pajamas – my neighbors have all seen ‘em as I am unafraid of being outside for a chat in them. If I don’t have to go anywhere it’s not unusual for me to stay in pajamas all day. Although I will put on clean ones to go to bed in. Again. Onward…I wear it in place of coats. Good, high end Marc Jacobs coats. That is the depth of my love for this horribly ugly sweater.
All that is why the next is so painful. I’ve decided I need a new ugly cardigan. A new ugly cardigan that is more presentable and not acrylic. I can have an unbridled love affair with my ugly store bought acrylic cardigan but I cannot knit with acrylic and I find that I can’t knit ugly. I’ve been looking at the Central Park Hoodie but it isn’t quite right and everybody and her brother has knit that thing. I am also looking at Ribbed Diamonds. That is reminiscent of my beloved but I am not yet committed. I would have to knit it at a smaller gauge maybe since I am not a man – contrary to the rumor about my balls – and I am not a big woman. I am a 10 on top, broad shoulders, and a 6 on the bottom, although, if I don’t get back into the gym STAT my bottom will be expanding. Although, I am attracted to a big boxy cardigan that I can throw on and go. I’ve got to decide because I need a big project and I would like to take it with me to Sock Camp. That is if I can ever work out my travel arrangements. It’s turning into planes, trains and automobiles. Plus, the cost of the flight is about to give me cardiac arrest. In order to get there in less than 12 hours I need a direct flight which is running 500+. Do you know where I can go for 500 bucks? Most of the world is open if you’ve got 500 bucks to spend on a flight. So I wait. And watch. And hope for a better price on the flight I need and try to resign myself to having to fork over my hard earned cheese.

Try the Rogue Hoodie cardigan. I’ve made non-cardi versions and the latest one is my go-to sweater. I wear it freakin’ everywhere. It’s not ugly, but you could pick some fugly-ass yarn to make it more old-mannish.
