Comcast cares?
By Holly | January 14, 2009
Someone needs to explain to me what exactly Comcast cares about. I think it cares about my money. It cares about having my money in it’s giant pocket. I can tell you now that Comcast does not care about my service. Comcast does not care about giving me the services I pay for every month.
My internet and phone service work sometimes. They are both constantly down. Steve West called last night about it and scheduled an appointment for a tech to come out this Thursday, 01.15.09. Tonight the phone rings once. It doesn’t ring again. About a half an hour later I get around to checking the caller ID. It’s a call from Comcast. I go to check the voice mail and have no dial tone. Figures. This is what our appointment is for, right? I finally get dial tone and retrieve my message. It’s some woman from Comcast calling to say that since they got through to my voice mail my phone must be working and they are closing out the ticket. She said there would be a tech in the area tomorrow dealing with noise on the line and if our service is weird tomorrow that’s why. She doesn’t leave her name or phone number. After 5 very frustrating phone calls – I don’t know if it was my phone (probably) or Comcast disconnecting me (it’s happened) – I call through on my cell and get a customer service rep – let me just point out the oxymoron that is that title at Comcast. I tell him what’s happened and he’s very sympathetic. That’s nice but it doesn’t fix my problem. He can’t find a reason why Comcast has closed out my ticket and canceled my appointment. I ask him what I have to do to get Comcast to honor the appointments they make with me and he replies “I don’t know. I don’t know what to do about that, but I understand your frustration.” What do I do with this? I ask him to transfer me to billing so I can get some credits. I finally get to a woman over there – after I hang up and call the appropriate number because the billing department he transfered me to couldn’t transfer me to the Atlanta billing office. Efficient, huh? The billing woman tells me she can’t credit me until the problem is resolved. I ask her how I am supposed to solve the problem when I can’t get Comcast to come out to my house? How do I solve the problem when Comcast cancels my appointments. I say APPOINTMENTS because Comcast did this to us last month, too. Scheduled and then canceled the appointment. We finally got a tech out here, she fixed the problem and it was good until this past Monday. Now the cycle is resetting. It’s like fucking Groundhog Day. Billing woman schedules a new appointment for Saturday and puts my cell phone number down as the contact in the hopes that rearranging the numbers will get them to keep the appointment. Then she offers me three months of inside wiring maintenance FOR FREE!!! because of all my trouble. Seriously. I ask her how I would ever suspect my inside wiring is bad when they can’t keep the signal coming into my house long enough to find out? She couldn’t believe I didn’t want to take advantage of that awesome offer. I told her all I wanted was for someone to come out here and clime up this pole and fix my internet and phone and give me what I pay for. Nothing more, nothing less.
This Comcast service hasn’t ever been reliable. If the cable is working it’s the internet & phone that’s out. If the internet & phone are working you can bet the cable will be out. Calling into customer service is a lesson in frustration. At this point I am going to call AT&T and see what they can do for me.
p.s. I don’t know when I’ll be able to post this but the time right now is 9:49 pm on 01.14.09
p.p.s. it went. I may die of shock

I had a huge fight with them and canceled my service in Boston. Long story short, my cable box never worked right, and they wouldn’t come out to fix it, so I finally left work early to trek out to their office on the subway carrying a cable box (they told me they would replace it) to find that they couldn’t replace it because they didn’t have that box because they were recalled and they wanted to give me an HD box for $12 more a month. I don’t have an HDTV! So, I asked them to give me my same service at the same price and they refused! Apparently they would rather lose my business entirely (both cable and internet, over $60 a month) than let me have the service for the price they told me I should be paying!
In any case, I got Verizon DSL which was cheaper (no cable, though) and had fewer problems with it – at least their customer service people actually fixed the problems when I called.

The cable television itself hasn’t been a problem since they brought us a new box – it’s always the box, eh? We’ve always had internet/phone issues and I see no end in sight so I am shopping around for those. I need my intertoobs!
