Cold and rainy…again

I don’t know what is up with this weather. We should be having 50°F and 60°F weather and it’s been consistently cold. Now, it’s not only cold it’s raining. The winter months are bad enough but when they last longer than they should it’s downright torturous. All that is keeping me going at this point is that we’ve got another trip to Mexico coming up. This will be our fourth? trip since my sister moved down there. We’ve spent some time in Tijuana, of course, at Hilary’s house and checking out our surroundings.

And the last time we were there we spent our time in Los Cabos.

Hilary and I did make it out to Phoenix for an immigration rally and march that happened over my birthday weekend. It was unbelievable! Thousands of people attended – all shapes, sizes, colors and creeds. Really amazing. Later that night at our hotel things got a little out of hand. Not with the marchers or anyone involved in the rally. Things got outta hand when we got sucked into the vortex of two cranky, old, rich drunk dudes and the one’s train conductor girlfriend. But that’s a story for another day. Lemme just say that old drunk golfers falling down are hilarious!

We leave again April 3rd to head back down to Baja California Sur. Can’t forget the Sur as that makes the Mexicans salty. This time we will be meeting Hilary in Mazatlan. From there we’ve got a cabin booked on the ferry to La Paz. After La Paz we head back to Los Cabos. I can almost feel it: family, good people, great food, sand, sun and tequila. It’s almost time to get my shorts and flip flops out!

…to New Year…

Dude? Aren’t we all trying to get over? A better life? Hope for our children? Hope for ourselves?

I had two conversations, back to back, tonight that made me question humanity. One almost came to blows, the other just reinforced my ill will toward the US military. Long story short, I was going to Mexico for my 40th birthday. Sis and I were going to go somewhere warm to get away. After tonight’s experiences I am going to Tijuana. I will be spending my time working at Casa del Migrante. I will cook, pass out food, distribute clothing, minister to needs – whatever needs to be done to meet the needs of my fellow man/woman. Yes, I share a country with small minded, ignorant sons of bitches but I will do what I can to live a life that is moral and just and one in which I can look myself in the mirror and be okay. One that does not include the thought that it is okay to put “gun towers on the border in order to shoot anyone crossing”.

Killing is never okay. Killing is always wrong. I will always witness. I will never back down.

I’ve been absent for a minute…or two. Did I tell y’all about my sister? She is on a Fulbright teaching exchange in Tijuana, Mexico. She’s got a blog. A blog you should read. Her latest adventure has got me totally jealous. To cut to the chase: she hooks up with some guys that are participating in the Baja 1000 and ends up hauling ass through the dark desert, under a starlit sky, beer in hand. Only in Mexico.

This is a message I received from the No More Deaths organization. If you are in the area and can help that would be awesome. If you want to donate money (nomoredeaths.org) that would be awesome too. If you want to send stuff over to me to haul out there that would also be awesome. This sis and I are going back to the desert to hike the trails starting June 13th. We’ll be out June 27th. They need socks, underwear and non-perishable food items. It’s all on the site.

Okay, I suck. I haven’t done much knitting as my yard and gardens have taken up most of my time. Today I got a call. THE call. My chickens were at the post office. I didn’t receive warning that they had shipped so I was scrambling a little. I had to finish putting together the coop but we got it done. Moms came over to help and I was glad she did. For your viewing pleasure:

There are three more breeds of chickens that I need but I am trying to be patient and find them locally. Patient is not my thang.

I’m not there, I’m here. Ireland. Dublin to be exact. At least for the moment. This afternoon we are heading to Belfast and then on up around the coast. I am ready to do some relaxing driving. I had only one near miss so far and that can’t even be classified as my fault, really. A bus crowded my right hand turn and instinct took over to stick to the curb so as not to get smooshed which put me into oncoming traffic. All that time spent watching Starsky & Hutch paid off though and all is well. Nobody even honked or screamed! The Irish are so polite. Must be rubbing off on my people as they didn’t scream either. Although, really, that’s probably due to my mad driving skillz more than anything. After that we hit the pub. We all needed a Guinness to calm ourselves. Sorry about the pic. I am posting from my phone.
